Wondering When

As states begin to consider how to safely reopen businesses, I have been reading posts and comments from bodywork professionals all over the country with concerns about how this can happen safely for practitioners like me. One example of the dilemma is expressed here. It is a huge problem and a number of clients have asked me what I think about when I will be working again. The honest answer at this point is I really don’t know how I feel, probably my biggest concern is that the information we are getting seems to change every day, and I would feel more comfortable if there was consistency about exactly what we are dealing with. Perhaps we all have to get used to a degree of learning to live with a different normal, but figuring out what is and isn’t safe when it comes to touch therapies is very unclear.

What I do know is that I miss contact with my clients very much and that has been on my mind even more this week as my ‘virtual’ choir has been practicing songs for the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of VE Day. This event so important that back home in the UK, the day has been made a public holiday so that people can pay respect to those, like my father, who served in WWII. It is also intended as an occasion to celebrate the end of the war in Europe which meant that many people could reunite with their families after lengthy separations, including in many cases with their children who had been evacuated to safety. The songs we are singing resonate so much today as, once again, families and friends are being forced to spend a long period of time apart, albeit for a very different reason. Fortunately we now have incredibly advanced technology which allows us to remain in contact with each other, through blogs like this, social media and so on. It is not the same, and it doesn’t replace being able to see each other in person (if only I could offer remote reflexology!), but it does help. It also allows us to enjoy beautiful examples of humanity like the one below – these people are actually neighbors on a real street in England. All I can say is, I’m not sure when it will be, but we will indeed meet again!

Love your writings! I feel the same. So much uncertainty. Miss my sessions with you and seeing your welcoming face each week. Looking forward to whatever the new normal will be provided you are in it. We will figure it out and have a new understanding about how important human touch really is. ❤️
