Spring Awakening

After a long, snowy winter, spring is finally arriving in my part of the world. Everyone seems to have been eager for the longer days, and of course some warmer temperatures, but despite this anticipation, the change of season can also be accompanied by a less welcome sense of anxiety – even though the change is one we have looked forward to. It may seem strange to feel this way, but there is a logic which can help us make sense of why we may feel little discombobulated at this time of transition.
Having more hours of daylight can make us feel pressure to be more productive with our time, and the mental “to do” list seems to get longer. All those things that we put aside during our winter ‘hibernation’ are suddenly urgent and pressing. An increase in the pace of life, more energy in the air, can throw us a little off kilter as the body – and mind – adjust to the new season.
So what can we do to embrace and enjoy the spring, without feeling overwhelmed by all that needs to be done? The answer may appear counter-intuitive, but taking a step back once in a while, whether through music, massage, reflexology or meditation, can help refresh and clarify our thoughts and take the pressure off so that we can focus on what is truly important. Allowing the mind and body to retreat into complete relaxation can help us keep perspective and balance on what we really need to accomplish each day can help us better enjoy the beauty and grace of this season of renewal.
