Another week of complaints of the sniffles has kept my mind on the things I do to help relieve that annoying feeling of a stuffy, runny nose. During a reflexology session, the focus is around the tops and sides of the toes, as that is where the sinus reflexes are understood to be located, but for self-help, access to points along the fingers is easier. Applying pressure to any places which are sensitive until the discomfort eases is suggested. After reflexology, it is very common for people to comment on noticing a clearing of the sinuses.
I find using a neti pot to flush the sinuses a big help if I am feeling stuffy, and this ancient tool, widely available at most drugstores, is being increasingly endorsed by doctors as an aid to help with the unpleasant symptoms of allergies, sinus headaches, colds and post nasal drip. My dentist even recommends it to fight bad breath which can be linked to blocked sinuses. Before starting any new regimen, you should check with your doctor that it is ok for you, and it is important to follow the directions closely of course. It can be a little tricky to get used to the sensations when you first try but be patient, persevere – and be prepared to feel as if you have swallowed a gulp of sea water until you get the hang of the process! Some people find sinus rinse kits, which have a similar purpose, a little easier to get used to. The idea of cleaning out the nasal passages may seem rather gross, but once you get used to the technique and experience the relief you will likely be glad you took a deep breath and gave it a try – and afterwards, that deep breath will be even deeper!
