Time out

There are many reasons why people decide to try reflexology, one reason they often keep coming back is because a session can deeply induce the relaxation response. This has profound benefits on the whole body – if the mind and body are able to relax and soften completely, things are more likely to function well. Regularly practicing coming to relaxation can also help someone maintain a calmer frame of mind when faced with a stressful situation. Unfortunately, we often rush through the days in our modern world in a state of heightened stress, which has negative physiological effects on the brain and body, but more and more mainstream attention is being given to the importance of balancing busy lives with time to relax. Some school districts, including my own, have introduced wellness programs which include elements of mindfulness training, and there is increasing scientific evidence to support the lifelong benefits of teaching people how to relax. ABC news anchor, Dan Harris has written and spoken extensively about his own experiences with anxiety and panic attacks, one of which occurred on air, and how despite his initial skepticism, meditation has become a vital part of a healthier, happier life. An article in this week’s Time magazine features a study which highlights the link between anger and heart attacks, one more very good reason to keep that particular negative emotion in check. So do yourself a big favor and find the time for a regular time out – spend 15 minutes a day meditating, take that yoga class, get lost in a book, receive reflexology, go for a walk – it’s not a waste of time, but a way to prolong and improve the time in your life.
