Finding perspective in solitude

When people see me, it is not unusual for them to comment on how much they appreciate the opportunity a session affords them to take a break from the world for a while, and how their body, mind and spirit all benefit from the retreat. Allowing everything just to be, without judgement or expectation, often seems to enable us get a better perspective on things. I was therefore intrigued by an interview I heard recently on NPR with the writer, Fenton Johnson, who has chosen to live a life of solitude. What he has to say is fascinating and thought provoking. He is not lonely and remains engaged with the world, but maintains a certain detachment which has been very freeing for him. The conversation has remained with me and so I share it here. I am not in any way suggesting that this would be a path for everyone, but, as the world seems to get a little more frenetic by the day, finding a way to be alone with oneself – as opposed to being lonely – may be something we all can benefit from.
