Brain Food

Many people think that reflexology is all about the feet, and while it is true that clients usually receive the direct benefit (although ears and hands can be worked on too), reflexology is about the whole body – and that includes the mind.
There is more and more attention being paid to brain health in our society as concerns rise over the frightening rise in the number of cases of Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. Recently I came across the term ’ementia’, a form of forgetfulness caused by not having to use the brain for recall in the way we did before we had devices to memorize things for us. I have sometimes used the phrase ‘internet brain’ when I notice it being hard to remain focused on a long piece of text or to get involved in a book, as I fear this problem stems from spending too much time flitting about on the busy screen online. So, given that we are not going to go back in time and that the internet is part of our lives, how can we make sure we use it in a healthy way and perhaps to expand our minds?

My last post talked about the importance taking a break away from all computer devices, which I believe is vital, but if we are going to spend time in front of a screen, there are also incredible online resources we can access to stimulate the brain and activate the mind in positive ways.
On NPR’s Fresh Air this week, Terry Gross interviewed Kevin Carey about the “University of Everywhere’, in which he spoke of the expanding number of free, high quality, open access courses available online. He cited the website www.edx.org as a good example, featuring a wide range of courses from some of the world’s top universities. He took a biology course offered by MIT and I was prompted to explore the site, which is a treasure trove of top-notch courses on everything from literature to maths to the world of wine. If you wish, you can connect with other students, professors and even receive assessments. I am going to explore a class out of UC Berkeley about the science of happiness – why not see what appeals to you? Stay connected, but in ways that are perhaps good for you and less of a time suck than another cute cat video clip!
